The 12300 South Design-Build project in Draper, Utah was the first design-build project led by the Utah Department of Transportation for a major urban arterial. Our team constructed this project with the highest level of efficiency and effectiveness, allowing UDOT to add over $22 M of work to the project. The project was completed ahead of the original schedule with the highest level workmanship and safety, giving UDOT the maximum value for their money.

One challenge of the project was to maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction for the public, which the contractor was able to achieve with an innovative and well designed traffic plan, mitigating the impact to the traveling public. The project consisted of 7 miles of roadway reconstruction through Draper and Riverton Cities, construction of a new single point interchange at I-15, a new grade separated railroad crossing, design and replacement of a bridge over the Jordan River, and a pedestrian structure and numerous intersection improvements.

Community relation challenges for this design-build project were magnified due to the fast-paced decision-making process and tight construction schedule. The team was actively involved in keeping the public informed and aware of construction activities along the corridor.

Context Sensitive Solutions were a key factor in the design, implementation, and construction of this project. UDOT also required the design-builder to acquire the needed right-of-way which included approximately 1,000 right-of-way parcels from 300 property owners. Innovative ideas by the team saved a significant amount of time and money. For example, three long haul fiber lines had to be relocated, and the team found a way to lower the lines 25 feet vertically, which eliminated the need to relocate them. This saved UDOT over $1 million and helped to maintain the schedule.

This project received10 awards including Roads and Bridges Magazine Top 10 Road Projects in US, UDOT Engineering Excellence (Context Sensitive Solutions) Award, ACPA Best PCCP Urban Divided Highway Project award, AGC of Utah Transportation Project of the Year award, and three Intermountain Contractor “Best Of” awards.
