Exit from I-25 onto West Lincolnway (US-30) and you are at the Gateway to Cheyenne. This major business artery improvement rebuilt 1.59 miles of West Lincolnway to include four lanes, a turn lane and landscaped median. The Wyoming Department of Transportation project was constructed in cooperation with the City of Cheyenne, Sema Construction as Prime Contractor and Interstate Highway Construction responsible for the concrete paving, median landscape walls, and shoulder curb and gutter.
One of the busiest routes in Cheyenne, Lincolnway is the access to downtown and includes the Little America Resort. Specifications required all business access to be maintained at all times. Where possible, traffic was routed to allow entire intersections to be paved and re-opened to traffic in two days.
The design called for 9” PCCP over 12” of subgrade and 6” of base. WYDOT accepted a proposal changing to a 6” base of recycled concrete placed on triaxial geogrid, accelerating the schedule. This recycling also contributed a “green” element by eliminating the need for hauling new material.
The median consisted of 20” landscape walls with sloping rundowns transitioning into Type A curb and gutter islands. This was the only 20” design available that was National Cooperative Highway Research Program 350 crash tested. With over 40 monuments and light pedestals throughout the islands, surrounded by white stone and an assortment of shrubs and trees, these medians have become the showcase of the project. The project also received a safety award from the Wyoming Contractors Association.
