WW Clyde has officially started work on the new Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) at Powers Boulevard (CO 21) and Airport Road in Colorado Springs. The $46 million project is crucial for managing the daily traffic of over 50,000 vehicles. It will also ensure easy access to key areas like Peterson Space Force Base.
“We’re thrilled to get started on a project that will make a real difference in the community,” said Cameron Thompson, Area Manager at WW Clyde. “The new interchange will significantly improve traffic flow and keep drivers, cyclists and pedestrians much safer. We can’t wait to see everything come together.”
This project, in collaboration with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), is designed to replace the current signalized intersection with a DDI. This interchange will be the third of its kind in the Pikes Peak region.
A DDI directs traffic to switch sides at the intersection, allowing for continuous, free-flowing access onto ramps. This design removes the need for left turns, which are often problematic in traditional intersections, which minimizes delays, reduces conflict points and prevents wrong-way entries onto ramps.
Key elements of the project include bridge and ramp construction, embankment placement, concrete paving and the installation of new traffic signals. Pedestrian and bicycle facilities will also be added to make the area more accessible for everyone.
The project is expected to wrap up by late 2026. For more information and updates, visit the CDOT project page.
